Generative AI is not an IT project. It’s a GxP transformation. And, as we all know, that demands accountability.

Because speed can't compromise safety, Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) governance isn’t a nice-to-have - it’s a non-negotiable compliance requirement for scaling the good stuff.

Which is why the Generative AI for Life Sciences Playbook includes Key Recommendation 2: Always design for HITL governance.

The tech is a powerful assistant, not an autonomous decision-maker. And to transition from pilots to production with confidence, your strategy must be built on three pillars - from day one:

1. Clear Expert Ownership:

A designated Subject Matter Expert (SME) must review, edit and ultimately approve every output.

2. Unbreakable Audit Trails:

Every output must be traceable. Log the prompt, the AI’s draft output and the human's final, approved version. Treat as controlled documents in the QMS.

3. Integrated Controls:

Governance must be embedded directly into workflows, complete with versioning and approval gates. Include explainability, so SMEs can justify decisions under inspection.

This rigor transforms AI from a risk factor into a predictable, auditable and trustworthy partner.
