SYNCING INTELLIGENCES

You see them coming. You step out of their way. They step into yours. You both apologise and go again. So who was supposed to move where?


Scientific Reports published a paper last month in which researchers put 90 people through that awkward pavement moment and measured what they call mutual hesitation - when you end up face to face longer than you'd like.


When the pass went cleanly, the angle of their heads began to diverge early. Before their shoulders or hips - fractions of a second before they stepped aside. But when their heads stayed aligned longer, that awkward moment became more likely.


Two weeks later, Nature Communications published a study of 47 nine-month-olds in the UK and Singapore watching a woman on screen speak three invented languages. Sometimes her eyes were fully visible, sometimes partly covered, sometimes hidden. And at group level, significant learning was only detected when her eyes were fully visible.


A pair of eyes holds no vocabulary, yet they seem to signal which sounds matter. And even though it was a recording, the stronger the adult-to-infant neural coupling, the more the baby learned.


In another July paper, researchers at Austria's Wolf Science Center broke human-dog and human-wolf interactions into five-second slices and found strong reciprocal influence: what the humans did predicted what the animals did next, and vice versa.


Three papers, three settings, all circling how much coordination between intelligences happens beyond the explicit message.


So what does that mean for working with digital intelligence?


Most of our interactions are still built around the explicit exchange. Prompt. Response. Command. Correction. But natural coordination draws on much more: tiny signals about attention, intention, timing and state.


So whilst the hypegeist gazes elsewhere, perhaps that's the more interesting question: what needs to become true for human and digital intelligences to get in sync?


And for working together to feel a little more like second nature.
