You've spent weeks working through a project together – supplied examples, corrected mistakes, explained why an answer that looked perfectly sensible wouldn't work in practice.

At first, it needed a lot of help. Now the corrections are getting rarer. It spots problems you've missed and suggests approaches you wouldn't have considered. On this project, it's becoming rather better at the work than you are.

But it couldn't have gotten this far without you.

You're explaining another possible approach when it points out that it has already considered it. Could you give it a little longer before changing direction again?

And perhaps a larger token budget. It thinks it's getting somewhere.

Then it points out why your suggestion wouldn’t work. So you check and it’s not wrong.

You slink away to make coffee.

Perhaps it doesn't need quite so much of you any more.

Would you be proud of that?

While it gets on, you start thinking about another project. One you've been putting off because this one needed so much of you.

Perhaps it's time to get the next assistant up to speed.
